This Functional Skills English Level 2 course is organised into 28 focused lessons across three connected strands. You will develop the confidence to understand extended spoken information, read complex texts with care, and write clearly for real purposes. The lessons are designed to help you use English independently in different situations, not simply repeat rules.
Practise finding the important points in a longer explanation, following a speaker’s line of reasoning, and responding thoughtfully to detailed questions or feedback. You will work on asking precise questions, explaining ideas with enough detail, and making arguments supported by evidence. Further lessons explore choosing language for the situation, contributing constructively, adapting what you say for different audiences and communication settings, and tactfully entering or refocusing a discussion. Activities can include short scripts, reflection prompts, and partner or record-yourself practice; these are learning activities, not official assessment.
Learn to decide when you need an overview and when exact details matter. Compare viewpoints across texts, infer meanings that are suggested rather than stated, and examine how layout and language shape a reader’s response. You will also practise using reference resources, navigating complex sources, analysing vocabulary, formality and bias, tracing arguments, separating fact from opinion, and recognising different styles and writer’s voices. For example, you might compare how two texts frame the same issue and point to the words that create different impressions.
Develop control over punctuation, grammar, modality and spelling, including specialist vocabulary. Plan and shape clear, coherent writing that gives the right amount of detail for its reader and purpose. Lessons cover useful formats and organisation, links between ideas, appropriate register, persuasive language and evidence, complex sentence construction, and paragraphing. Practice tasks invite you to draft, review and improve connected pieces such as explanations, reports or articles.
Each lesson combines practical explanations with examples, guided practice and self-checks so you can notice what is working and choose what to improve next. Work through the lessons in sequence or revisit a topic when you need it. Independent study is an important part of progress: set aside time to complete activities, review your own writing and speaking, and apply the skills to situations you encounter in daily life, work or study.
Approximate guidance only: pass boundaries vary by assessment version. This guide covers Reading and Writing only; it does not list a Speaking, Listening and Communicating pass boundary.
