Maths Level 1 focuses on the practical number, measurement and information skills used in everyday life and work. The intended study scope follows the three main Functional Skills Maths Level 1 topic strands below, using independently written explanations and examples rather than reproduced awarding-body materials.
The number strand covers reading and comparing whole numbers, working with positive and negative values, and using the four operations. It includes place value, multiplying and dividing by powers of ten, square numbers, order of operations and following simple worded calculation rules. Further topics include fractions, decimals and percentages; calculating parts of quantities; rounding and estimating; and using ratio and simple proportion in practical situations.
This strand connects calculations with money, time, length, mass, capacity and temperature. Its scope includes choosing and converting units, interpreting scales and simple plans, and working with perimeter, area and the volume of familiar shapes. It also includes recognising properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, using angles and bearings, and checking that measurements and answers have appropriate units.
The data strand covers collecting and organising information, interpreting tables and common charts, comparing groups of data, and calculating and interpreting the mean and range. Probability topics include describing likelihood and using a numerical probability scale. The emphasis is on reading labels and scales carefully and explaining what a result means in its original context.
Across these strands, the focus is on understanding the question, choosing a suitable method, showing clear working, estimating where useful and checking whether an answer is reasonable. Paper, a pencil, a ruler and a calculator are useful for independent practice.
